The next day, Ember could not get the old woman out of her mind. They dropped April at school and headed into the station, but Ember’s instincts told her she was in the wrong place.

“You’re worried, Ember,” Kali said as they walked around the station for the third time. “I know it’s got something to do with that dream. I can’t believe I didn’t wake up.”

“Shh,” Ember whispered, stroking her head. “I know that you were deep in your own dreams. I don’t expect you to be there for me every second.”

“But I’m your familiar,” Kali muttered, angrily. “I should have been tuned in, especially if it was a supernatural dream.”

“I think she was trying to reach just me,” Ember said, thoughtfully. “I’ve got to head out to Shady Acres nursing home. I’m being drawn.”

“Then let’s go,” Kali said, eagerly. It was a testament to how worried she was that she didn’t insist on visiting the break room first for a snack.

Cedric decided to accompany them. He looked nervous as they got closer to the destination and Ember was curious—it wasn’t in Cedric’s nature to be nervous.

“I’m just thinking about your dream,” he admitted. “Prophetic visions are not a normal thing for you.”

“I know,” she agreed. “But I really felt like this woman came across space and time looking for me. The fact that we couldn’t place her face made me think it was just a stress reaction though, not a portent.”

“But you want to go to Shady Acres now,” Cedric said as they pulled into the wide gravel drive. “Is it a hunch or something more?”

“Something more,” she admitted. “I’m being pulled here. I think there is more to this than Pryce’s murder.”

“Lots of disturbed souls,” Kali said, looking up at the dark windows. The building loomed above them, the pale walls in constant shadow from the large, over hanging trees that had no doubt given the place its name.

They headed into the reception area and Ember was pleased to see the place looked neat and tidy. There were a few patients wandering around and all of them looked happy and relaxed. It appeared that Pryce’s death had been a good thing for the home itself and the people who lived and worked here.

“Hello,” Ember said, approaching the desk. “I’m here as part of the investigation—”

“Oh, of course,” the receptionist said, standing to shake her hand. “I’ve been handling the enquiries. Can I help you, officers?”

“I was wondering if you or anyone working here could identify this woman?” Ember held out her drawing and the woman took it from her, staring at it for quite some time.

‘My word,” she whispered. “It’s Mary Painter.”

“You knew her?”

“Yes, dear. She was a sweet old thing. Never caused any trouble even in the terrible conditions here. God bless her, but she even defended Jarry more than once.”

“Can we speak to her?”

“I’m afraid not, dear. She died a few years ago. It was an awful tragedy. She choked and there was no one to help her.
